in 1998 i presented my ideas for a huge table and 4 chairs in the city center of berlin for the first time. i did so in the goethe institute in rotterdam. since that time i have been continously working on the ideas, hardly having time, allthough i visited berlin very often in that period but also before.
for me berlin is an important place, because of its situation, because of its history and because of my own feelings and history. it ios one of these cities where i would love to live and could live. i am not living there, but i could and i would enjoy it.
goodbye lenin covered the period which i know as well and about which i spoke with many people, from berlin and from former eastern germany. the changes were huge and it seems that the proces of change still continues.
in 1998 i made my proposal for berlin as a sign of hope for the future and now almost 10 years later i feel that the need for the project only increased. the project can be realised in a short period and taken down again and hopefully many will cooperate and help.
i have seen the wrapped reichstag by christo, the enormous crowds being there and the energy that this art project made possible. i am glad i have been able to be there and see and feel with my own eyes and senses what an enormous influence art can have.
