at the end of the road

this morning i made pictures between the "slufterdam" and the entree of the "nieuwe waterweg". the wheather was changing rapidly, it was dark, light, sunny, rainy, sometimes grey, sometimes, black and sometimes clear. as usual i drove to the end of the road, parked the car, got out, walked until i coud see the water and made some pictures.

slowly my collection of pictures, made at the end of the roads, grows. i have parts of the dutch coast, the french, the german and the finnish. the coming days and weeks i will concentrate on those areas along the dutch coast where i have not been yet.
the maasvlakte grows rapidly. some time ago during my first visits there,i was astonished about the almost endless emptiness of most of these, human built, areas, now i am amazed at all the buildings and constructions coming there. the whole area is completely articial, man made, man designed and man maintained. nature however is powerful and the area slowly transforms where it is possible into a partly man-made, partly natural area, with lots of birds species, rabbits and other small animals.

the whole area shows a kind of almost typical dutch purist approach. of course it is a functional area, where many ships can come and go, and trains and trucks. but at the same time it is an area where people are working, possibly also living and in that sense it challenges creative spirits to come with ideas.

the scale is huge, the aea very functional and except some fishermen there are not many people coming there on a regularly basis to go shopping, get their kids from school or have a beer. that is why the area is so challenging. there are more harbours under construction and more harbours that are huge, but this one is man made, artificial and still for large parts under construction: part of the new harbour is even still unvisible.

in that sense some of the pictures i made today, driving to the end of the road and making pictures, trying to get as far as i can, will be useless later on, once the new harbour is there. this illustrates the character of the project i am working, continuously driving as far as i can, seeing how far i can go and knownig that everything is relative. for the time being i can go to the end of the roads, but that is only valid for this moment. i know that i am unable to go to all the end of the roads in europe or asia or any other part of the world, i know that the roads change, the views change, but is that not true for life as well?
