2007-09-23: basic ideas 4 & fresh apples

i do not like the idea of virtual architecture. i do not understand architects who wite and therefore claim to be architects. i want to see it, feel it, smell it and be able to walk through, sit there, eat there, sleep there and enjoy the spatial qualities. that is a matter of full scale work, of allowing others to see the work with all their senses and in that sense be able to use all their senses. i want touse my senses, all of them, not only my mind or my eyes. architecture can be so much more then just a building, just something that fits in a conceptual frame of mind, something that the cleint wanted.

i guess it was churchill who said that the first that is killed in a war is the strategy. for me that is the same allthough i am not talking about war but about being an artist. i am not an architect because architects seem to have to limit themselves to functional "buildings" and "functional". as an artist i do not want to suffer from those limitations.
furthermore those who build, the builders so to speak, are very important. differerent builders means a different "building". similar builders, but at a different moment, also means a different "building". the situation is important, in shiort a different situation means a different "building".

it was very liberating, but also a little scary in particular for those who assisted swith the cosntruc tion of the different moidel, to take wooden house apart. like we did " the house project" in pori, finland in 1993 and put the parts together in a differetn way without any plan. the idea came from john cage' s work where he takes 150 cm of tape with mozart music, cuts the tape in very small pieces and puts the part again together in a different way so that the tape can be played again. we did the same with the wooden house and the resulting structure was still a house but completeley different.

another important installation took place in tilburg, the netherlands in 1994, where a truckload of scaffold material was used to make the argument exhibition space compelety inaccessible: " i hate architecure, i love building" was the theme of that project. the original idea came up in pori, finland, during the "house project". the original model for the tilburg project shows a high rise building where scaffold material simply breaks through the doors, windoiws and staircase from inside out. for safety reasaonbs we could not allow the exhibition space to be without guard and with oipen doors during the night. it would have been fun hwoever to realise the tilburg installation in a real apartment building.

"table no 1" made of 1000 meter of wood was painted in different colours and assembled to make a "table" 500 cm long, 60 cm wide and 70 cmn high, in such a way that the table was a table without being a table. the table was presented in japan several times and in dutch and belgium galleries: i saw many visitors with smiling faces.

there are more projects that are important for my work and for the development of my ideas. i guess i am an artist and not an architect. I feel that my work is not always easily understood and has many layers of meaning. what i do has many sides. many sources of inspiration and involves many disciplines. most of all my work is about having fun with others, however serious and theoretical the issues at stake are.

it is time now to eat fresh autumn apples, blood coloured oranges and possible mushrooms. today iu saw and bought them. here is hardly time to cook, so i will keep the mushrooms for the weekend with some well roasted porcmeat and some nice spanish rioja. at the background preferable chet baker or kiri te kanawa with songs by schubert and maybe a short visit to the beach to enjoy the wildly moving clouds and the rapidly changing wheather.
