The number 226 was based on the Modulor system designd by le Corbusier, based on the size of an average human being of 1.83 m. and the golden section. 1.83 m. divided by the golden section is 1.13 m. and 2 x 1.13 m. is 2.26 m.
Based on this measurement system, furniture, hosues and complete housing areas could be designed.
The 226 installation was conceived by Ger C. Bout. 8 x 8 fields of 2.26 m, formed the lay-out of the project. on the crossing of the 2.26 lines, poles were erected, 2.26 m high. Sometimes the poles were connected with some fence material, sometimes not.
Dancers from the Rotterdam School of Dance in Rotterdam, made a choregraphy and performed in the installation. Musical rythmical instruments, based on the same measurement system, were made for this performance.
The project was presentend on the Doelenplein in the City Center of Rotterdam and several other places.
The staff of the Rotterdam School of Dance assisted in the project. The project was supported o.a. by the Rotterdam Art Foundation.
