the house of words was conceived thinking about inspiration.
inspiration is great when there is some freedom, when it is not too close, when it is possible to see it as a kind of sun or moon, circling around the earth.
that is what the drawing of the house of words, circling around the world, symbolises. you can look at it, when you need it, but the inspiration is so far away that it is not dominant.
it is different when inspiration get very close, like a tabel and 4 chairs. it does not look like inspiration anymore, but rahter like a frame of reference, a kind of setting. personally i do not like that kind of dominant surroundings. i want to remain independent, but still need my inspiration.
inspiration for me is very important. i need others to get energy, to use their work as criteria for what i am doing, to get sharpen my thoughts and to take care that i do not get lost. i need others to show me what to do or what not do. just like others, i need normal human contact: food, wine and company.
for this project i made a list of 50 names of people that i found inspiring. that list was rather short, but somewhere i had to stop. there could have been many more names. everyday that list is growing. not all sources have the same effect. not all sources function the same at the same moment. and not all sources are allways fun. sometimes you learn things in a pleasant way, sometimes not, but so what as long as the learning goes on.
here are the names that were important for me when i worked on the project: louise lecavalier, toyo ito, robert irwin, vivienne tam, christo, henry miller, ilya prigogine, dennis oppenheim, gerrit rietveld, yoshi yamamoto, rei kawakubo, ron ara, michel foucoult, martin margiela, frank gehry, brancusi, david byrne, eva hesse, d.t. suzuki, carolee schneemann, aldo rossi, öyvind fahlström, panamarenko, brian wilson, anthony caro, nam june paik, luis baragan, karl popper, laurie anderson, david smith, kaj franck, piero manzoni, yves kelin, gordon matta-clark, ann halprin, chris burden, jan schoonhoven, miles davis, david thomson, nan goldin, alan ginsberg, meredith monk, marina abramovich, trisha brown, bruce chatwin, robert frank.
